Hi, Has anyone experienced problems with mouth ulcers or sores in there mouth. I am on Methotrexate 25mg weekly, along with Sulphasalazine and Hydroxy and have been on this combination for about 4 years. Just this last week, started with mouth ulcer at one side and then at the other , which is now elongated and does not seem to be getting any better. Have got a GP appointment tomorrow, but just wondered if anybody else had experienced this problem and if taking the Methotrexate and Sulphasalazine is stopping the healing process. Thanks Candy

Hi Candy, when I first started on mtx I had a lot of trouble with mouth ulcers. I also had continual cold sores for a while, and each time it was put down to the mtx. Luckily I just seemed to overcome them on my own eventually and was able to continue the mtx with no more problems. It is horrible though mouth ulcers can be so painful and can take a while to heal. Whether the drugs actually stop them healing I do not know but mtx especially, can actually be a cause. Hope you get some answers tomorrow, Zena x

Hi Candy - I don't get mouth ulcers but for the first ever I've had bleeding, receding gums. I changed my toothpaste for a special medicated one Oral-B pro-expert from Sainsbury's, and I use an antiseptic mouth wash - chlorhexidine gluconate from Superdrug. I used a more expensive mouthwash to start with but this is the same active ingredient and seems to do the trick. Gums looking very pink and healthy now! Hi Candy.
When i ws first diagnosed in May i was on a combination of steroids and MTX, which caused really nasty mouth ulcers and infections. My GP said it was just a case of waiting it out for them to heal up. I currently still have a couple, which were the bigger ones so i guess thats why they are taking there time!
So let me know if your GP has any tricks up there sleeve to get rid of them!

Hello there,
Yes I have always sufferred mouth ulcers. Horrid they are as well. They make you very miserable don't they . At eh moment going through a bad time with my mouth and I even have some ulcers in my throat I use warm salt water and gargle with it. Not the most pleasant thing to use though

Hi All, Thanks for your replies. Went to see my GP, and on looking up Methotrexate, said it was the 3rd most common side effect. They, as you say Rose, certainly make you feel miserable. Her advice Jen was to miss out the Methotrexate for one week and see if it helps. Well they are well and truly on the mend, so happy at the outcome. Salt washes as you advised did help Rose as did not eating acidic fruit. Many thanks for the help. Candy x
